Establishing a university clinic for specialized nurse practitioners (SNPs) and nurse clinicians in Laval

The project will open the first university clinic for specialized nurse practitioners (SNPs) and clinical nurses in Quebec. This innovative project is the result of joint efforts by the CISSS de Laval and the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Nursing. It promotes collaboration between the academic community and the health network to provide the public with better access to front-line health services. It also helps train the next generation of nurses by hosting SNP interns and nurse clinicians at the clinic, located at the Université de Montréal (Campus de Laval-Pavillon Guy-Joron).

Currently, the university clinic offers care and services to adult and pediatric patients who first sought treatment at the Cité-de-la-Santé Hospital ER for an acute health issue and who were redirected because their health condition did not require technical support from the ER. The services will soon be expanded and time slots with SNPs or clinical nurses will be offered to clients who call Info-Santé at 811 or use RVSQ.

Between December 19, 2022, when the university clinic first opened, and early February 2023, 468 clients were treated. 43% of those who sought treatment did not have a family physician, 86% were referred by the Hôpital de la Cité-de-la-Santé ER, 78% were from Laval, 10% were from the Laurentians, 5% were from Montréal, and 4% were from Lanaudière.
