3rd position

Special ward

Unit 1, CHSLD de Donnacona du CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale – Part of the department was adapted to accommodate 5 people who, for various reasons, couldn’t be admitted to a regular care unit. As a result, we created a special 5-bedroom unit with a dining room, common area, ambulatory area and secure outdoor yard accessible to residents.

We welcomed these patients who went from finding it difficult, even intolerable, to be around others, to living with their fellow residents amicably. The centre was adapted to their needs, and now all the residents can live their lives unrestricted, regardless of their condition.

We provide support to our residents, instead of imposing restrictions.

We incorporated empathy and kindness to help the unit’s residents reclaim their dignity. Those who had to use restraint devices when they first arrived no longer need them. One resident was able to go outside after being institutionalized for 2 years. We built a close relationship with someone who initially refused any kind of contact or personal hygiene care. Thanks to the reassuring nature of our care staff, they were able to reduce one person’s aggressive behaviour using effective distraction techniques.

We create a stimulating living environment full of love, peace and happiness. Despite their differences, residents learned to live together peacefully.

One key to the project’s success was the dedication of our care team. Our team is made up of 5 people working 3 shifts, and they have made a real difference in the lives of these 6 residents and their families.
