Simon Deschênes, your Health Personality 2021

Simon Deschênes was elected by his peers as Health Personality 2021. Although he did not expect to receive this title, he was very moved to receive this dose of love from his colleagues. Working in the health care field for the past 12 years, he started as an administrative officer and has been quietly moving into the union field for the past eight years. Today, he is president of the Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du CISSS de Lanaudière- CSN, (STT CISS Lanaudière CSN) where he defends the interests of his members.

Very active in the business, Simon never stops. On paper, his schedule is from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but it is not uncommon for him to leave at 10:00 p.m. A lot of personal time is invested in getting things done. “You really have to love what you do. It would be wrong to think I’m doing 9 to 5,” says Simon Deschênes.

What does he love most about his job? Mobilizing his members and realizing the impact of his efforts. Today, thanks to his great commitment, people recognize him, even those who know him a little less. He manages to keep in touch with all of Quebec through his Facebook pods.

Simon remains very humble: he is proud of all the mobilization that has been brought in without the attention being turned around him, but on the movement. Every day, new people are added. His little babies, as he likes to call them, are growing and becoming the future champions of tomorrow.

The biggest challenge he faced this year? Isolation among colleagues because we couldn’t get together. What he really feels sorry for are the people who are isolated. This was also noticed within her own team, the distance that is gradually established, by the fact that we are always at a distance. In order not to be overwhelmed, he reminds us that it is very important to think about oneself and to have personal moments. “Sometimes you have to pull the plug” – Simon Deschênes. He can recharge his batteries with his family and make music. And yes, outside of his work hours, he is also a musician!

As he approached retirement, would he have taken another job? “No, doubly so!” – Simon Deschênes. He would not have had any regrets, even with the pandemic, the salary difficulties or the problems encountered. He is very proud to work and to be part of the public health care system.
