Brigitte Martin and Josianne Malo, NICU pharmacists atCHU Sainte-Justine developed the Guide pratique des médicaments en néonatologie au CHU Sainte-Justine (Practical Guide to Neonatology Medication at CHU Sainte-Justine). This clinical tool was initially distributed on CHU Sainte-Justine’s intranet platform in March 2017 and on the general website in January 2018. It is intended for health professionals working in neonatology.
This practical guide is intended to optimize the use of medication in neonatology. The tool consists of 120 medication sheets outlining indications, mechanisms of action, dosages, routes of administration, adverse drug reactions, items to monitor, contraindications and precautions.
The practical guide is a unique tool adapted to local practice, allowing clinicians to optimize medication use in an extremely vulnerable population that is traditionally much less well represented than pediatrics in pharmacotherapy reference materials.
Because the guide is online, it can be updated instantly based on advances in knowledge or changes in drug presentation or availability. The responsive website format was chosen to make it easy to consult the guide on both desktop computer screens and mobile devices while maintaining user-friendly, intuitive navigation across all devices. The result of extensive interdisciplinary collaboration, the guide is useful to any professional who uses drugs to treat the vulnerable neonatal population. It is a great information-sharing tool, with over 100,000 pages viewed since the initial launch.
